    mount stuart

A house tour of Mount Stuart on Scotland's Isle of Bute – the fabulous ancestral home of the Marquess of Bute was featured in W's October 2006 issue. Each room contains rich family history – the dining room is brimming with family portraits by Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough and others. A frieze running around the "family bedroom" depicts scenes from the life of the 11th-century Scottish queen, St. Margaret, and a three-story marble hall with an 80-foot ceiling is the centerpiece of the house. Its colonnades, stained-glass windows and vaulted ceiling are decorated with stars and planets, reflecting the 3rd Marquess's interest in astrology. Personally, the quaint little library is more my style. Can you even imagine throwing a party there!

I love Matchbook and I just ran across your blog. I saw your comment that you loved the Mount Stuart library, and I just had to tell you that I was fortunate enough to spend a great deal of time pouring over their archives at a little desk set up for me under one of the lovely stained glass windows there. I studied the marquess who was responsible for building the house - along with many other fascinating projects. If you haven't visited, you should. The Isle of Bute is astonishingly beautiful, and the house is glorious.
